2023-24 Don Burgess International Scholarship Recipient: Max Stone
From the classroom to the playing fields, Max Stone immersed himself in a multitude of activities during his days at Earl Marriott Secondary School in Surrey, British Columbia. However, it was rugby that emerged as the driving force catalyzing his growth and preparing him for the future.
Off the pitch, Stone's diverse interests were on full display as he founded his secondary school's chess club, participated in Model UN - a conference where students debate policy and government affairs - and explored leadership through a recreational coaching program. His curiosities extended to the athletic realm too, captaining both the rugby and soccer teams while also joining the curling squad and coaching the junior soccer program.
"Rugby has been instrumental in getting me to where I am today," Stone stated. "Through the sport, I have made countless invaluable connections and lifelong friends. It has made me the person I am today and taught me so much about leadership."
Stone's involvement in rugby took root in 8th grade at Earl Marriott before blossoming at the club level with Bayside Sharks RFC. His talents also earned him a spot on the BC 7s representative side and an opportunity to continue playing at Western Washington University.
On the collegiate pitch at Western, Stone embraced a multifaceted role as he split time between the fly-half and scrum-half positions.
"I am a good fit in those spots because I enjoy thinking strategically about the game and have a good foot," he explained.
The intellectual aspects of rugby deepened Stone's appreciation for the nuances and tactics involved in the sport's decision-making processes.
As Stone looks ahead to beginning law school in August 2024, he plans to transition towards coaching while maintaining his connection to the rugby community that helped shape him.
From captaining teams to founding clubs to excelling in multiple sports, Stone's wide array of interests projected his inclusive outlook on the world during his secondary school years. However, rugby emerged as the common thread interwoven through his formative years - instilling core values, nurturing diverse friendships, and stirring his passion to lead and mentor future generations.
