June 17, 2024

For Jack Martin, rugby's imprint began at the tender age of 4 when he started playing for his local club Leigh Rugby Union Football Club near his hometown in England. What followed was a youth career steeped in the sport's traditions and values.

Martin's skills blossomed at St. Mary's Catholic High School, where he balanced rugby league at the institution with rugby union for his club side. He also played soccer and golf during his free time, immersing himself in an array of athletic pursuits.

As his talents matured, doors opened for Martin to represent the region and country on prestigious teams. At 14, he earned a scholarship with the Wigan Warriors Rugby League club. Two years later, he suited up for the Irish Exiles (Rugby Union), a squad for qualified players of Irish descent not born in Ireland.

From 17 to 19, Martin progressed through Sale Sharks Academy's elite rugby program. He captained his county's squads at the U17 and U20 levels, showcasing leadership abilities that complemented his physical skills.

"Rugby has been one of the most important things in my life. I have learned so much not only on the field, but off the field too," Martin said. "It has taught me respect, sportsmanship, teamwork and many other things which will undoubtedly help me in any future roles."

The life lessons extended beyond the pitch. "Even small things like coaches telling us to leave places as we found them, so making sure we tidy each changing room properly before leaving after a game."

Rugby provided opportunities to forge lifelong friendships and see the world through tours across Europe and Australia. Now, it has brought Martin to Western Washington University on an exchange program after two years at Manchester Metropolitan University.

"I have made so many friends throughout my playing career, and some of my best friends back home are due to playing rugby together from an early age. It has given me the opportunity to see different parts of the world."

At Western, Martin embraced the outside center position, combining forces with the fly-half to engage defenses and feed the team's dynamic wingers.

As he looks to complete his law degree and rugby career at Manchester, Martin hopes to elevate his game even higher

"Going forward, I will continue to play rugby and hopefully progress to a higher level, whether this is in the UK, Australia or the US."

Through rugby's universal bonds and pathway, Martin has discovered immense personal growth and countless unforgettable experiences. His journey is far from complete.
