Ray Green
Ray Green began playing rugby in college for the Towson Tigers outside of Baltimore, MD and fell in love with the game after his first match. He started off at prop and eventually made his way out to center, after a short stint at fly half. After making All-American Ray transferred out to the University of California to play for the Golden Bears. Coached by Jack Clark and Kevin Higgins, they won 3 national championships and played the first matches on Witter Field. Green received his first cap as an Eagle versus Ireland at Landsdowne Road while he was a junior. He and his co-captains led the team to a national championship and were all selected for the Athlete of the Year award at Cal in their senior year.
After university, Ray went to New Zealand to play a season for the Otorohanga Rugby Club and played briefly for the King Country National Provincial Championship team, now called Waikato. After that trip, he scored the only try of his international career to help the Eagles beat Canada, in Canada in the last minute, by one point. He then went on to play for OMBAC in San Diego and was a member of the national championship team in 1996 and eventually became co-captain of the squad.
Green received 11 caps for Eagles 15s and 5 for Eagles 7s. All of his jerseys are displayed prominently and proudly at his house along with his first cap. Today Ray is a coach for the Coastal Dragons youth rugby club in Encinitas, CA, where his son Charlie has been playing since he was 6. Charlie is a member of Dragons U-14 team this year, loves the game as much as his father, is a crafty runner, and would be hard to tackle in a phone booth.
For the last 10 years, he has helped to build a number of mobile technology businesses with the scrum half for PAC in 1995 when they won the National Championship. Green has a BA in English literature from the University of California and his MBA from Indiana University. He is the author of When I Was Great, a short book about his rugby journey and reconciling what to do after his playing days were over. He has been married to Laura for 18 years and they have two teenagers, daughter Hannah and son Charlie.
