Rugby In the Olympics

October 15, 2024

Fun Fact

Rugby first appeared in the Olympics in 1900! Interestingly, rugby first appeared as an Olympic sport in 1900 when the games were held in Paris, France.

Since then, it’s appeared intermittently until its formal reintroduction at the Rio De Janeiro Games in 2016, with both a Men’s and Women’s 7’s tournament played. At those games, Fiji won the Men’s tournament winning their first-ever Olympic medal in the country’s history and Australia won the Women’s gold medal. The U.S. Women's Team (below) secured the bronze medal in this year's Olympic Games with a last-second victory over Australia!

Each year, the US Rugby Foundation supports schools and leagues throughout the U.S. to expand the game. Since its inception in 1963, the USRF has been a leader in promoting the sport of rugby, from youth and high school programs, to coaches and referees. Recently, the USRF has partnered with Imagine Rugby to bring non-contact rugby to elementary and middle school Physical Education programs throughout the United States.
