2024-25 Kevin Higgins & Kaler Family Scholarship Recipient: Renee Blazer

April 25, 2025

Renee Blazer discovered her athletic calling in rugby after exploring numerous sports since age three, including soccer, gymnastics, diving, and dance. When her uncle introduced her to rugby, the previously unfamiliar sport immediately resonated with her natural physicality.

Beginning at Cincinnati Rookie Rugby under coaches Kyle and Erin O'Brien, Blazer developed foundational skills before joining Walnut Hills High School's 15s team as a freshman. She later added fall 7s to her repertoire and became known primarily as a flanker and wing-forward, though she developed versatility across multiple positions. Under mentors including Thomas "Tad" Steen, her exceptional tackling ability and dedication helped her team reach the state championship three consecutive years.

"What set her apart was clear she was not just there to be part of the local high school club," recalled Steen. "It was clear she had found 'her passion'."

While excelling in athletics, Blazer maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA at Fairfield Senior High School, graduating Summa Cum Laude with honors. Her achievements included competing in Ohio's Business Professionals of America state competition and induction into the National Art Honors Society.

"From the moment my fingertips were placed upon a rugby ball, rugby has always felt like a sport perfectly crafted for me," shared Blazer. "When I step on the pitch, my brain feels quiet and my body feels calm; the sense of peace I experience is impeccable."

Currently, Blazer plays for Bowling Green State University's Women's Rugby team under coach Roger Switzer while pursuing her bachelor's degree. Her future goals include playing all four years at BGSU, joining a local women's team afterward, and making a lasting impact by building teams from the ground up, teaching fundamental skills, and providing equipment to those in need.

"What sets Renee apart is her willingness to take feedback and use it as a tool for growth," emphasized coach O'Brien. "Her dedication to mastering rugby and drive to constantly better herself will serve her well in both academic pursuits and her future rugby career."
