2024-25 Kevin Higgins Scholarship Recipient: Dante Rivera

April 25, 2025

Discovering rugby late in his high school journey, Dante Rivera quickly transformed his natural athleticism and work ethic into excellence on the field. Rivera began playing during his junior year at Redwood High School after seeing the success of the Marin Highlanders and hearing about the sport from friends.

"I started playing rugby after football season in my junior year. I had a lot of friends that were playing and saw how successful the Marin Highlanders were so I wanted to give it a try," said Rivera. "I really enjoyed the sport from the first practice and only grew to love the game more ever since."

Despite his late introduction to the sport, Rivera's dedication earned him a starting spot midway through his first season playing lock for the Highlanders' varsity squad. His commitment extended beyond practice, as he spent countless hours studying rugby, ultimately earning the Marin Highlanders Rookie of the Year honors.

During his senior year, Rivera transitioned to tighthead prop. His coaches recognized his leadership qualities, naming him "Sergeant of Arms" – the one to keep everybody focused and motivated. He was recognized as Forward's Man of the Match against national powerhouse De La Salle and awarded the prestigious Highlander of the Year honor.

"Dante has become a leader on our team. His work ethic and motivation raises the level of participation and commitment of those around him," noted John Vantress, Marin Highlanders Varsity Head Coach.

Rivera maintained a 3.78 GPA while also excelling in football, earning second team all-league honors and selection to the Tri-County All-Star Game. In just two years, rugby became a focal point in his life, giving him "joy, long-lasting memories, and brotherly bonds."

Coming from a single-parent household, Rivera will continue his rugby career at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, pursuing a degree in business administration while playing for the Cal Poly Mustangs.
